2011-2012 ISSUE COMMITTEES

EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Advocate for and monitor municipal, school board, and state policies, issues, partnerships, funding matters, school resource officer program, and other concerns in connection with education in Broward County.  Enhance communication with the Broward County School Board to ensure equal opportunity for all students to obtain a quality education.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
Review applications, conduct interviews, and provide general assistance in organization and administration of the League’s Scholarship Program.

LEGISLATIVE & ADVOCACY COMMITTEE
Establish, provide strategic direction, promote, and monitor the legislative action plan of the Broward League of Cities.  Build strong relationships among our elected officials and state legislators, county commissioners, and school board members in connection with the League’s Legislative Action Plan.  Evaluate the legislative support of issues/legislative action agenda of the League.

SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE
Address and coordinate with all agencies quality of life issues to maintain a sustainable, livable community, including, but not limited to, green building initiatives, alternative energy sources, and water conservation impacts.

GROWTH MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
Recommend implementation of policies that influence new development and redevelopment in order to promote a sustainable, vibrant and equitable community.  Monitor effective growth management as a continuous process of evaluating results, anticipating trends, and updating goals and methods to manage desired and expected growth.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Propose strategies to influence the direction of private sector investment toward opportunities that can lead to sustained economic growth.  Foster and create healthy municipal economies involving the allocation of limited resources in a way that has a positive effect on the level of business activity, employment, and fiscal stability.  

PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE
Explore public safety issues for Broward municipalities and assist in identification of strategies in connection with financial implications and funding sources, legislative issues, and intergovernmental relations and communications coordination.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Provide opportunities (workshops, study groups, webinars) for elected officials to develop their maximum leadership potential, communication abilities, and inspire a renewed sense of ethics and civility in leadership.  Develop enhanced membership strategies (both municipal and associate member) and training programs for newly-elected officials.

FISCAL STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE
Monitor financial issues and concerns of municipalities, including, but not limited to, impacts of decreasing property tax revenue and further budgetary constraints and identify opportunities and strategies in areas of revenue generation and maximization.  Study impacts of union employment, including pensions and other benefit programs, to ensure provision of quality services to our residents while maintaining reasonable costs and funding.

POLITICAL CANDIDATE COMMITTEE (Standing Committee Pursuant to By-Laws to be Convened in 2012)
Prepare questionnaires for distribution to political candidates (other than municipal, judicial, and gubernatorial) to understand their positions on significant municipal issues, and make responses available to the membership for their informed decision making.  Evaluate the legislative support of issues/legislative action agenda of the League.

FINANCE/AUDIT COMMITTEE (Standing Committee Composed of Executive Board)
Act as fiduciaries in monitoring the financial undertakings of the Broward League.

BY-LAWS COMMITTEE (Standing Committee to be convened in 2013 Pursuant to By-Laws)
Conduct the periodic review of the League’s By-Laws for accuracies and any other timely measures for consideration.

The Broward League of Cities depends on its committee system for success. Committees consider proposals, develop initiatives and
make recommendations to the Board of Directors. Broad committee participation is the key to our organization’s strength, and I strongly
urge you to join the committee of your choice.  Please submit your application by Friday, July 15, 2011.  If you are interested in joining a committee please contact the League office.
