March 2011 “My View”

In reflection of my second experience with the Broward League of Cities, a clear image of what the organization stands for was made evident. A sense of unity and democracy emanated from the meeting as the League transitioned from an education-based seminar on Robert’s Rules of Order to demonstrations of public services that the private sector provides to the city into a consensus vote on documentation evolving the League‘s polices.

The lecturer during the presentation on Robert’s Rules of Order was extraordinarily knowledgeable, as well as able to explain things in an easily understandable manner. The  aforementioned abilities, in combination with her question-inclusive teaching style, created a friendly environment for all to learn the rules of parliamentary procedure. One part of the information session I particularly enjoyed the discussion of motions to postpone indefinitely; formulating an interesting solution to a lose-lose situation that will allow the community to avoid certain political controversies while continuing to remain efficient. Furthermore, the lecture on Parliamentary procedure provided pluralistic perspectives on principles of ethics and equality that municipal actors throughout the county may use to more effective and fairly practice politics.

After the presentation, the meeting of the Broward League of Cities moved onto a larger room wherein many corporations involved in matters from public sanitation and government accountability to anti-drug programs set up information tables. Stopping at each table, [a fellow Ambassador] Kim and I were shown both the importance of government spending in the local economy and the important functions that the private sector carries out within the community. To note advantages that the community reaps from one government funded program in particular, the effects of drug testing on volunteer students and education programs for drug awareness constitute an altruistic change that helps many students in the Broward County school system.

After learning a great deal about promotion of the private sector for the public good, the night progressed into a wonderful meal and, promptly after the pledge of allegiance and some prayers, the League illustrated democracy at its finest as the league called upon all its members to either vote on changes in league policy, and an affirmative consensus was made clear. In addition to this exercise in democracy, we were shown the true kindness and generosity of the community when the winner of the fifty-fifty raffle donated his winning to the scholarship fund.

All in all, this evening only served to validate my high opinions of the Broward League of Cities, and further point to a large success for the people of Broward County and its municipal government members.
