In reflection of my first experiences with the Broward League of Cities, I recall both the meeting of and exceeding of my expectations. The League began with an exemplary explanation of the facets of the institutions, its goals, and its methodology for achieving them. During this time my hopes for educational enrichment and for political understanding were vindicated.
I watched our guest speaker from the Florida League of Cities efficiently cover both the issues facing the municipal government members of Broward County and the bills in which the Florida legislature was considering in order to enact or repeal them. For example the issue of Pill Mills was raised in light of what both could be done, and had to be done, in order to solve the problem and perpetuate a healthy, drug-free society. The former helped in facilitating my knowledge and ability to make a difference in my community, and in that way I believe that sessions such as this one will be of insurmountable importance. The presentation also showed how networking gives members of the League a way to have their voices heard and policies accepted. By doing so, members have the opportunity to better develop the county economically and politically and can put them into practice. For this reason, this part of the Broward League of Cities seems instrumental in the development of good policy and the preservation of a good quality of life for the residents in Broward County.
The night then moved into meetings between public officials and charity organization representatives. Members examined and heard the day-to-day operations and the needs of charity organizations.
After this portion of the meeting, the other three delegates and I proceeded to dine with League members. I was personally seated next to the President of the Broward League of Cities, otherwise known as the mayor of Coral Springs, Mr. Roy Gold. During this meal I was privy to some of the political aspects of our society, such as the importance of what we do as members of the community.
Ultimately it was my conclusion that the Broward League of Cities serves as an extremely important educational and civic role in our community and day-to-day lives. I am proud to be a part of it.
