Throughout the year I have found myself writing about the importance of having an educated and politically active population. To recap, I believe the importance of political activism lies within the impact that voters have at the ballot box, and the extensive implication those same votes have on society. With that being said, I would also like to note, as I did last month, that in this way knowledge is power. It is essential to producing responsible political activism. For this reason, I would like to take this chance to discuss my efforts to promote such activism and education within my community, in hope that anyone reading will follow suit and put faith and effort into promoting a brighter tomorrow.
The first of my efforts began quite some time ago, as I pondered what sort of change I could bring to my school. I wanted to effectively grant students an opportunity to learn about the political world and express their views. As I thought, I realized my unique position in the education system grants me the ability to bring about opportunity to more than just high school students. I attend a school which is quite different than most American high schools, The College Academy @ BC. This school, in essence, is a duel enrollment program which enters student both into the Broward County Public Education system and into Broward College. Subsequently, my enrollment here affords me the ability to create opportunities for both high school and college students. Putting my best ideas forward, I formulated a debate club on campus, which now holds weekly meetings allowing students from all different strokes of life to learn and discuss issues our community faces. Last night, we held our first inter-squad competition promoting new foundations for confidence and political literacy.
I know that I alone can only do so much and cannot change the world; however, we, the political activists and leaders of our community, can together unite and form a world of political literacy rather than apathy. A world where government is understood not to be ineffective, but rather nuanced and demanding the highest degree of perfection for the people, and a world where people strive for change, rather growing unhappy in their discontent. This world is not somewhere far away in some distinct galaxy. In fact, in my view, it is only a little hard work, ingenuity and commitment away. I urge you to take action, whether it be through legislation giving funding to debate and politics clubs, simply sitting down and talking to people to about politics, or promoting and directly creating opportunities for others to share their opinions and points of view. Only together do we know what we are capable of.
