December 2011 “My View”

This past month, I have studied the legislative process in my Advanced Placement Government and Politics class in school. I have learned numerous things that I can relate to things that I learned for the Broward League of Cities. We learned about the process by which a bill becomes a law, specifying the procedures of both the Senate and House of Representatives. Additionally we had a mock Congress in class and had to create our own bill ideas. We then debated these bills trying to pass the ones that we personally supported. This activity reminded me of what I learned at the first Broward League of Cities workshop that I attended.

The first workshop was about the Florida legislature and the process the bills go through. It also discussed bills circulating Florida at the time. The AP Government assignment was quite simple for me because of what I learned and retained from that Broward League of Cities FLC Legislative Workshop.

Moreover, as we learn more in AP Government about the legislative process, I will relate more things that I remember throughout the course of being a Broward League of Cities Student Ambassador. When being taught about local city governances in my government class, I will definitely be able to relate it to the interaction between the cities at the Broward League of Cities meetings.

Specifically, since I plan to major in political science, I will be able to use the information that I have learned firsthand in my studies. Moreover, I have grasped a better understanding of the intricacies of local government which has motivated me to potentially seek a career as an elected official.
