August 2011 “My View”

While watching the GOP Republican presidential debate on September 7, I realized that the election is very quickly approaching. One major issue that was discussed was the safety precautions that have been taken since the attack on September 11, 2001. This led to the discussion of confidence in Americans today. I personally believe that this is one of the most crucial issues that the country is facing today.

America has always been viewed as at the top internationally. Citizens have always been proud of being a part of this country. Recently, it seems as if Americans have gradually loss confidence in the country. One of the best ways to restore confidence is to help Americans understand how the government is run. This would allow the citizens to be able to comprehend what the government is able to do and how it does it; therefore, giving Americans an increased confidence in the government to effectively manage the country.

Additionally, it seems as if environmental issues are becoming quite crucial in the United States. When listening to the discussion, I immediately thought of the benefits that organizations such as the Broward League of Cities can have on the environment. I remembered back to the last general meeting I was able to attend in June that had a ‘go green’ exhibit. Events such as these general meetings work toward protecting the environment locally. By displaying various ways to protect the environment that each city is taking, other cities are able to learn about methods that they could adopt. Moreover, this example could be taken to a higher level by sharing ‘go green’ ideas between counties on a state level. Ultimately, states should have special occasions to share ‘go green’ initiatives that they are taking and recommend. This would be the ideal way to move out country forward environmentally.

Watching the GOP Republican presidential debates highlighted key issues the United States is currently facing. It also made me think of these problems locally and how they should be handled. It is truly commendable that Broward County has a League of Cities because this is one of the most effective ways to tackle any problem.
