I was not able to attend any of the Broward League of Cities meetings recently; however, the knowledge I gained from being a student ambassador has been very prevalent in my mind. Upon receiving my early decision acceptance from Dartmouth College I began to think about exactly what career path I plan to follow. I came to the conclusion that I will major in political science and minor in international relations. After interacting with elected officials at Broward League of Cities general meetings and workshops I can definitely say that I am quite interested in the seeking a public office.
Prior to attending Broward League of Cities meetings, I never really considered the various tasks that elected officials take on for the city. I was surprised when I attended workshops and learned about all of the initiatives that cities participate in. I never realized that there were so many methods by which the city could assist certain efforts. I was especially impressed by the efforts towards ‘green’ environmental initiatives and animal protection. I did not think that many cities were actually considering issues that are important to its citizens. This was an inspiration for me to seek public office knowing that cities put a great deal of time into creating programs that align with their constituents’ desires. I think a job like this one is very admirable and is one of the most effective ways to help the community.
The Broward League of Cities has truly helped me make a decision on the career path that I wish to follow. One of my main goals is to pursue a career in local public office. I think it would be very rewarding to assist the community and be involved in government. The education I receive at Dartmouth coupled with the experience from my exposure to elected officials will hopefully help me to succeed in a public service occupation.
