August 2011 “My View”

Being a Student Ambassador to the Broward League of Cities has given me the unique opportunity to interact with local elected officials on a monthly basis. Last month, my position as a Student Ambassador afforded me the chance to converse with an elected official in the United States House of Representatives, Allen West. In a special meeting, elected officials met with Representative Allen West for a round-table discussion, and I was invited to attend.

We live in an era in which the media has created the perception that politicians in Washington have lost sight of what they were elected to do. The Allen West meeting I attended completely contradicts that perception. Congressman West had a pen and paper in hand, and was eager to hear from elected officials about issues affecting local communities, especially those issues involving the relationship between the national and local governments. Congressman West explained that the federal government often passes legislation without considering the impacts to municipalities. This usually occurs in the form of unfunded mandates. This puts an immense strain on cities and Congressman West explained his interest in assisting local communities.

Congressman West also explicated his views on the Florida Everglades. I was glad to hear that he wanted to make the Everglades a priority and ensure that this beautiful area is not further destroyed. The Everglades is the watershed for the South Florida community and provides a home to many of South Florida’s most distinctive flora and fauna. The ecosystem also provides a substantial amount of tourism dollars to the local economy, further illustrating its importance to the community.

Overall, it was a surreal opportunity to meet with Congressman West, and I enjoyed listening to his views on the issues. While I do not agree with some of his views on public policy, his willingness to listen to his constituents and local elected officials gives him solid marks in my book.
