As the call for a new class of ambassadors circulates throughout the county, I thought it would be an appropriate time to reflect on my experience as an ambassador and provide some insight in to the experience for the 2012 applicants.
When I initially applied to be a student ambassador, I thought the extent of my role would require attendance at a few meetings; however, after attending my first meeting, I learned that my conjecture was anything but the case. The meetings were much more than merely assemblages of elected officials talking to each other—they were moments of insight on the political process on the local level. Coming from an internship in Washington, DC, it was extremely intriguing for me to see how decisions made on the national level impact municipalities. It was equally as intriguing to see how different municipalities face similar issues; as such, elected officials from different municipalities can communicate with each other about how to best solve common problems.
The networking aspect of the meetings has been another unique feature of my ambassadorship. While it is extremely difficult to remember the names of everyone I meet from meeting to meeting, I have gotten much better at creating “small talk” and actively engaging in conversations with people I have never met before. If I had a dollar for every business card I’ve gotten throughout my experience, I would be one wealthy ambassador. While I haven’t had to call upon any of the individuals I’ve met, it is helpful to know people in departments such as water quality and sanitation if I ever need assistance with something.
The monthly “My View” blog postings have been another aspect of my experience that have been quite beneficial. Prior to my involvement with the League, I had never had a blog of my own nor did I ever consider making one. However, with my own blog, I can convey my views on certain issues of public policy or discuss the happenings with the League. The blog has been a great outlet for me to discuss things that are important to me.
Moreover, anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in politics should consider applying for the ambassadorship. It is a life-changing experience that exposes you to the inner workings of local politics and the elected officials that make the decisions that impact us directly.
