October 2011 “My View”

This month has been quite eventful for the Republican Party presidential nominees. It was amazing to see how quickly a frontrunner can lose his lead when something negative appears about them in the media. Herman Cain for example had quite a lead against the other candidates until allegations began to swirl about a sex scandal he had been involved in. His ratings with the public dropped almost instantly and many feared he was out of the race. However, luckily for him, another candidate’s big blunder overshadowed the discussion of the scandal at the last debate.

Rick Perry made the ultimate mistake a public official could make when running for office, which is forgetting what he stands for. In a mere cringe worthy 30 seconds, Perry could not remember what department he planned to cut if he was elected president. He realized his mistake almost instantaneously when replying with an embarrassed “oops.” Perry supporters feared that this might be the end for the candidate, but considering he is one of the top candidates when it comes to fundraising, the voters will see just how far his money can go after a blunder like that.

These top news stories this month really opened my eyes to just how quickly the popularity of a politician can fluctuate based on the media’s input. I now realize why many stations fret about bias toward a certain party. The voters believe what their favorite newspaper or television is reporting. I think it is very important to have unbiased news sources because if one party is favored in the media, then the democracy of elections is somewhat skewed. There is still time for frontrunners to come and go, and it will be interesting to see how it all works out it the end.
